The Promise of Spring–A Quilt Finish

Hello everyone!  You may have noticed that I took a few weeks off from blogging.  I had my birthday in there, a couple of teaching/talk gigs, and a quilt retreat with 13 friends from all over the US.  It was great!

But I’m back and I have a new quilt finish to share with you!

The Promise of Spring Quilt by Kim Lapacek

Blend Fabrics sent me some of Cori Dantini’s “Promise of Spring” fabric line for me to make a quilt with and use Therm O Web products on.

The Promise of Spring detail by Kim Lapacek

Many of Cori Dantini’s lines come with a panel of adorable featured creatures.  I created a log cabin pattern that you could use to feature any of her lines with a 12” x 44” panel.  You can get your own copy of the pattern from my craftsy site HERE.The Promise of Spring Quilt by Kim Lapacek

I embellished the quilt with some fun Decofoil.  Earlier this week I blogged for ThermoWeb and shared how you can embellish any project for DecoFoil!

It is a really great way to make your quilt pop!  I just adore this line of fabric and the quilt looks perfect hanging on my wall for spring time!

Cake Mix Recipe Bake Off with the Fat Quarter Shop–Week 2

Happy Monday everyone!  (and happy birthday to my dad if he happens to be reading this)  There’s a fun “Bake Off” happening at the Fat Quarter Shop for the next few weeks that use the new Cake Mix Recipe books.  Of course – I knew I wanted to be one of the “Bakers”.

Cake Mix and Layer CakesEssentially you use a Cake Mix Recipe and Layer Cakes (a focus and background) which helps you to make six different blocks from the units created after sewing.  I decided to mix things up a bit and use Alexa Abegg’s Cotton and Steel Hat Box Layer Cake as my focus fabric with Color Daze Batiks from Laundry Basket Quilts as my background fabrics.Cake Mix Recipe 2

You layer two 10” layer cake squares together and then stitch along the lines as indicated on the recipe sheet … right through the paper.  Once you cut out the blocks according to the stitches you will be left with the units to make two blocks.Hatbox Daze Quilt Top by Kim Lapacek

And here is the top I came up with!  This is made by pairing 30 layer cake squares to3ether and using the Layer Cake Recipe 2.  It measures approximately 32” x 38” and will make a great baby quilt – nice and bright!

There will be voting happening at the Fat Quarter Shop this week … you can plce your vote HERE.  Of course  - I would appreciate your support (I’m Kim L)!

Month 3–Pineapple–Bella Skill Builder Quilt Along

Happy April 1st everyone!  I don’t have any great “fool” ideas for you but I do have something to share with you today.  That little something is a couple of blocks for the 3rd month of the Fat Quarter Shop’s “Bella Skill Builder”.

Logo

I’d actually never traditionally pieced a pineapple block before!  I know!  Crazy!  I’ve paper pieced a few but I don’t think that’s the same thing at all.  I’m SO HAPPY that the Fat Quarter Shop required us designers to use all bella solids for this quilt.  I would never have chosen all solids on my own – but man – this is going to be an epic quilt that even I can’t believe how great the blocks are looking!

bella solid pineapple quilt block by kim lapacek

I used the Creative Grids Pineapple Trim Tool for piecing this block.  It was truly a game changer!  It made things so much easier.  I would highly recommend this ruler if you ever plan on making pineapple blocks!

bella solid pineapple quilt block by kim lapacek

I’ve said this so many times before but I LOVE samplers because of all the different methods and techniques it encourages me to use!  The Pineapple Trim Tool was definitely a win that will be added to my “go-to” list!

I still have three more pineapple blocks to make this month!  Watch my instagram feed to see how these progress!

bella skill builder sampler quilt blocks

I loosely laid out the blocks I have made where they will be in the final quilt.  I’m really happy I did that because it helps show me that I’m going to need some more blue on the left side and perhaps some darker colors in the bottom right.  I’ll keep doing this as I get more and more blocks made to help maintain balance even in all the scrappiness.

For good measure, I had to share with you all the blocks I have finished so far.  I’m seriously falling more and more in love with solids with each block I make!  (This is something I never thought I’d say!)

Head on over to the Jolly Jabber to see what other bloggers and quilters are doing with their Bella Sampler Quilts!  It’s so fun to see all the different versions!

Hand Dyed Dresden Neighborhood

Happy Friday everyone! I finally have a Friday Finish to share with you!

I’ve actually had it finished for a bit but completely forgot to share it on my blog.

dresden neighborhood blue bar

Surprise!  It’s another Dresden Neighborhood Mini Quilt!  This special quilt was made as a sample for Blue Bar Quilts.  Blue Bar Quilts is a new quilt shop that is opening in Middleton in the next month or so!  I can’t wait!!!!

The houses are made from a mixture of fabrics hand-dyed by Pam Niebauer, Creative Art Textiles, indigo-dyed by Jennifer Falkowski, and couple of prints from Victoria Findlay Wolfe’s fabric collection.  All of these will be available to purchase at Blue Bar Quilts and my pattern too!

Dutch Tulips Quilt Along with the Fat Quarter Shop

It’s time for another great quilt along with the Fat Quarter Shop – the Dutch Tulips Quilt Along.  When they asked if I wanted to sew along with it they told me I could use any fabric I wanted.  These are my favorite kind of quilt alongs!  I love sharing with you all my “odd” fabric choices and I’m sure you’ll agree that this time is no different.

DutchTulipsHeader

I decided to go scrappy!  I know – Shocker!  If I went a little bigger this would have been an ideal project for the Scrap Quilt Challenge.

Dutch Tulip Quilt Top by Kim Lapacek
I also decided to make a table runner/table topper.  It’s going to look awesome on my table for Easter this year!

preparing to fuse

This quilt is a mixture of traditional piecing and applique.  I love using mixed techniques.  The Orange Peel Set of Impressions Quilting Templates are very useful in making the tulip leaves.

  fused leaves
The pattern calls for all the same size leaves … but I had to tweak a couple … or seven and making them just one size larger because I could.

heat n bond lite

I fused Heat N Bond Lite onto the assortment of green fabrics before making them into leaves.  This made placing them and setting them until I’m ready to quilt them easy peasy.

Dutch Tulip Quilt Top by Kim Lapacek

I tried taking photos of the quilt this morning … it was quite windy …

Luckily, the clothespins held for at least a little while so I could get a decent shot.

Dutch Tulip Quilt Top by Kim Lapacek

I think the scrappy white tulips are pushing it a little but I do like the interest it adds to the piece.  Three different beige fabrics were used to piece the back.  I promise I’ll share with you the finished quilted project when it’s done!

Head over to the Jolly Jabber (aka the Fat Quarter Shops blog) to see how YOU can join in the Dutch Tulips Quilt Along and see what other bloggers created from this great pattern.  I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
