February 2017–Monthly Round Up

February has come to an end and it’s time for the Monthly Round Up! I love seeing what folks are creating from my patterns/ideas.

If you’d like your neighborhood featured you can email it to me – lapaceksorchard@gmail.com and/OR you can join my new facebook group – Quilt and Dream Along with Kim Lapacek and share it there!  Be sure to let me know if I have permission to share it (giving you credit of course)!

PS. If you’re quilt doesn’t make it in this months round up just send it again!  I am still working on a system to keep this all organized!

Let’s take a peek at some versions of the Dresden Neighborhood

Brita Rundgren of Norwaythe first two are from Brita Rundgren of Norway

Bright Challenge Dresden Villiage 2.17.17Jean Marie made a Dresden Neighborhood for the Project QUILTING “Brighter the better” challenge.

marcia's dresden

Marcia Wachuta took the Dresden Neighborhood a whole new direction!  LOVE it!  Read more about it on her blog HERE.

At the Quilts by Barb 2016 Quilt Retreat the attendees made their own versions of my quilt pattern Courthouse Log Cabin.Mary Lou Stronach

This version was created by Mary Lou Stronach – a good friend of mine and my families.  There is more of a story behind this quilt but I’m going to let Mary Lou share that when she’s ready.

And we’ll end this round up with Fawn Benzing’s version of my Patchwork Kite.

fawn's kite

She took the idea and soared with it!  I adore the kite she made!  And the little girl she gifted it to was over the moon – which makes it even better!

All of these projects are just fantastic!  Thanks for sharing them with us everyone!

Woven Triaxial Table Mat

I finally did it – I used my wefty needle to weave a fabric table mat!  I love the process and the result so much I know I’m going to do it again and again!

A HUGE thank you to Trisha Frankland (aka QuiltChicken) for holding my hand through my first wefty weaving experience.

Just Another Walk in the Woods Woven Mat

I’m give you a general overview of what I did on ThermOWeb’s blog but I highly recommend checking out t_jaye’s (she created the wefty needle) website and youtube for more tutorials, videos, tips and tricks to help you get started!

You can read all about the steps I took and how it all worked over at ThermOWeb’s blog HERE!

well-dressed man–Challenge 5 of Project QUILTING Season 8

Roughly half the population is male, so let's use them as our inspiration this week: the challenge is "well-dressed man."

IMG_1885_thumb[2]

(You can thank me later for this EXCELLENT version of the crappy song you're already singing in your head)

beckham_thumb[2]

Some men are better dressed than others - and sometimes it doesn't even matter what atrocity they're wearing because they're special to us for a million other reasons. Was your dad the greatest? Is you son the apple of your eye?

(my dad dancing with one of my daughter’s at my cousins wedding)

There are so many great textures and prints to be found in menswear - wool, tweed, herringbone, silks, stripes and polka dots, brocade, leather, and more.

Once (back in 2014), I tried to use this as the theme for my PQ piece based on birth date colors, but I got a little sidetracked by David Beckham:

men_thumb[3]If you're looking for some more inspiration, there's a Tubmlr perfectly suited (ha!) for this: http://welldressedman.tumblr.com/

Please remember: while there are fabulous prizes for PQ challenges from our amazing sponsors, this is really meant to be a fun inspiration to spark your creativity. Don't stress! Follow the call of your muse and make something that makes you happy, expands your skills, or brings joy to your life.

8.5-button-low_thumb[1]THE RULES:

1. Your project should be inspired somehow by menswear or a man.
2. Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline (February 26 through March 5, 2017). Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count toward prizes.
3. Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge (started on or after February 26, finished by March 5).
4. Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements:

  • Include patchwork.
  • Include appliqué.
  • Have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

5. Link up a blog post, flickr image, instagram post, or public facebook post to the linky at the bottom of THIS PAGE by Sunday, March 5, 2017, at noon CDT. Alternately, you may email the picture and description to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line by 11am on Sunday, February 19. Yes - that deadline is one hour earlier because it requires more work for Kim (which she is FINE with).

When you create your PQ entry's blog post or instagram or flickr image, please include:

  • a description of your creative process,
  • the overall size of your project (it's so hard to tell in a picture!)
  • where you are (ie, I create in Lodi WI)

If you decide to just directly upload your image to the link up party please email Kim {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} this information so she can share it with everyone else.

Scrappy Irish Chain Quilt “The North Shoe” Finished

I’m only about two months late but I’ve put the final stitches in the binding of this quilt I made for my brother’s girlfriend Laura for Christmas.

The North Shoe Quilt by Kim Lapacek

I didn’t have a helper or a ladder when I hung the quilt so I just hung it the wide way so it wouldn’t touch the ground.

Laura’s favorite color is pink so I used a bunch of different pink fabrics for the background.  I used darker “pink” prints for the main diagonal and fun blues for the accent.

The North Shoe Quilt by Kim LapacekThe pattern is “The North Star” from the book “Irish Chain Quilts: Contemporary Twists on a Classic Design” by Melissa Corry.  The pattern was really well written and the quilt went together quickly (when I took the time to work on it).  There are so many other great patterns in her book that I can’t wait to try out when I have more time!

The North Shoe Quilt by Kim Lapacek quilting close upOnce the top was done I sent it to Quilts by Barb for quilting.  She did an all over design of SHOES!!!!!  It’s absolutely perfect!

The North Shoe Quilt by Kim Lapacek

I did finish this up a week ago but I had to wait for some decent weather to snap a picture.  We had just that on Wednesday.  And today – an ice storm so school was cancelled.  Crazy weather this year!

The North Shoe Quilt by Kim Lapacek

The back is pieced with pink scraps!

I have one more tiny thing to do before I ship it to Minnesota – add the label.  I do have it ready … it just needs a few stitches and it’ll be all ready to go.  My goal is to ship it out on Monday!

Linking up to Finish It Up Friday.

Brighter the Better Project QUILTING Challenge–Time to Vote!

It is CRAZY warm here in Wisconsin – a high of 60-degrees – in February!  This is just not okay but I guess since there’s nothing I can do about it we might as well enjoy it.

Back to the point – it’s once again time to VOTE for your TEN favorite quilts created for the Brighter the Better Project QUILTING Challenge.  To vote just click on the heart (upper right corner) on each of the images of the quilt/projects you like best!  You can click on the photo’s themselves to read the “story” behind the quilt – my favorite part!  When you stop please take a minute to comment on your favorite thing about the quilt!  Let’s make Project QUILTING an inspiring, uplifting community that encourages and supports each other in positive ways!  Vote by clicking on the heart in the upper right corner of the image.

We’re on a Project QUILTING “off” week so be sure to catch up on all the things you may not have done during challenge week!

The person with the most votes will receive:

a Compositions Layer Cake from BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics!!!!

This is also where you can see quilts made by participants that aren’t allowed in the voting linking up due to their affiliation with Project QUILTING.  Please share the love with them too!
